Why Now?

This is the first-ever 51¶ÌÊÓÆµ and Me session dedicated to allergies and anaphylaxis. With increasing awareness of serious allergies and their impact, this event provides a timely opportunity to enhance understanding, share the latest research, and offer practical guidance on managing these conditions effectively.

Dr Helen Evans-Howells

Speaker's biography

Dr Helen Evans-Howells qualified with honours from Southampton University in 2005 and then trained as a General Practitioner, completing this in 2015. Dr Evans-Howells became interested in allergy due to her own experiences of managing a child with milk and nut allergies. She undertook the Masters in Allergy at Southampton University and qualified with distinction in 2018. After working with the allergy team in Southampton Hospital for 4.5 years, Dr Evans-Howells now runs a private allergy clinic (www.drhelenallergy.co.uk), which provides virtual and face to face allergy consultations. Dr Evans-Howells lectures extensively across the UK and internationally. She has the only community clinic outside of London which offers food immunotherapy, and she also helps run the peanut immunotherapy clinic at Southampton Hospital. Dr Evans-Howells has an allergy centre in Ringwood and branch clinic in Belfast.Ìý

Dr Evans-Howells works tirelessly to support those with food allergies, sending up an online support group and membership, developing an Eating Allergens Together Safely (EATS) club to support families with the introduction of allergens in a supervised setting (for those that are nervous or have others with allergies in the family), and working closely with charity. She was the previous Chair for the primary care group of British Society of Allergy and is now a Trustee for the Anaphylaxis UK Charity and Chair of their Clinical and Scientific panel. Dr Evans-Howells has appeared on The Jeremy Vine Extra show on Channel 5, BBC Radio, the Today Program, Stompcast Podcast and has written for various newspaper articles, raising awareness about allergies and anaphylaxis. Dr Evans-Howells runs a free private Facebook group to provide further support to patients and families struggling with allergies (www.facebook.com/groups/allergysupportwithdrhelenallergy/).

Professor of Paediatric Allergy, Evelina London Children’s Healthcare Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust

Speaker's biography

Professor Adam Fox read 51¶ÌÊÓÆµ at Cambridge University. From 2006, Professor Fox spent 9 years as Clinical Lead for Allergy (Adult & Paediatric) at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, London. After 3 years as Clinical Director for Specialist Ambulatory 51¶ÌÊÓÆµ, he took up the post of Deputy Medical Director (Commercial) for Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2018 until 2023. Professor Fox is also a Professor of Paediatric Allergy at King’s College London (KCL) and the founding Director of the KCL Allergy Academy, a postgraduate educational programme, which was a finalist at the British Medical Journal Awards in 2018.

Professor Fox was elected as President of the British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the first Paediatrician to hold this position, from October 2018 until 2021, after which he took on the role of Chair of the National Allergy Strategy Group from July 2022. As part of this, Professor Fox jointly chairs the Expert Advisory Group for Allergy with the Department of Health and Social Care and is lead for the National Allergy Strategy.

Speaker's biography

Dr Erin Alford is a counselling psychologist working with Anaphylaxis UK and the University of Surrey as part of a knowledge transfer programme (KTP) funded by Innovate UK. Erin has experience working with a range of mental health presentations and has worked in higher education, the public sector and private sector. Recently she started working on the KTP project to support Anaphylaxis UK in providing support for the emotional impact of living with serious allergies. In collaboration with the university of Surrey, Erin is developing support groups for allergy related anxiety and will be implementing an evidence based online CBT intervention. Additionally, Erin is working towards implementing a psychologically informed environment within Anaphylaxis UK which aims to enhance the support that will be provided and improve staff wellbeing.

Allergy Advocate, Researcher, Lecturer and Trainer, Allergy Action and Expert by Experience

Speaker's biography

Dr Hazel Gowland is a leading food allergy advocate, expert patient, researcher, trainer and a university lecturer. As a food hypersensitive consumer, Dr Gowland informs and shapes allergen risk assessment and develops innovative and effective training programmes. Dr Gowland research includes consumer and business behaviour, the quality of life and cost of living with food hypersensitivity, understanding and recording severe and fatal reactions and the regulatory context of food allergy.

Robert Epsom

EMEA Head of Sustainability, CBRE Investment Management

Speaker's biography

Mr Robert Epsom is the EMEA Head of Sustainability and Senior Director for CBRE Investment Management, where he leads the implementation of the firm’s Sustainability Vision across the region. A Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES), and Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (FICRS), Mr Epsom has been working in the sustainability industry since 2009. His expertise spans corporate sustainability strategy, Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) finance, greenhouse gas management, life cycle assessment and the circular economy, drawing on his background in process engineering. Prior to joining CBRE Investment Management in 2021, Mr Epsom was a Sustainability and ESG Advisory Consultant, supporting numerous blue-chip companies and major infrastructure projects. Mr Epsom holds a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree from Loughborough University and is Co-Vice Chair and Board Director for the Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (ICRS).

Beyond his professional achievements, Mr Epsom brings a deeply personal perspective to the topic of anaphylaxis. Having lived with a life-threatening tree nut allergy since childhood – a challenge now shared with his young son – he has first-hand experience of the significant impact this condition can have. Multiple serious allergic reactions, including incidents during international travel and a recent life-threatening reaction on a business trip, have highlighted the critical need for greater awareness and improved safety measures. This personal journey has fuelled Mr Epsom's determination to advocate for better preventative measures and support research in this area. Collaborating with Anaphylaxis UK, and with the support of CBRE Investment Management, Mr Epsom is currently supporting the development of a workplace policy for life-threatening anaphylaxis, aiming to pilot it within his organisation. Mr Epsom is committed to leveraging his professional platform and personal experiences to raise awareness and drive meaningful change for individuals living with anaphylaxis.

Speaker's biography

Ms Taj Randhawa has a strong background in marketing with experience in leading teams to shape and deliver business strategy. Ms Randhawa gained her Professional Postgraduate Marketing Diploma from the Chartered Institute of Marketing and has used her knowledge to support a variety of non-profit organisations. Her daughter suffers from a number of severe allergies and has relied on the Charity to support her and those around her to raise awareness.

Ms Randhawa has fundraised for Anaphylaxis UK in the past and brings to the Board her passion to support those with allergies by providing active and meaningful support, having experienced first hand the importance of Anaphylaxis UK in the lives of those that live with anaphylaxis.

Speaker's biography

Mrs Tracey Dunn is the Education and AllergyWise Manager for Anaphylaxis UK. Mrs Dunn joined the team following her retirement from Headship having taught and led schools for 30 years. Mrs Dunn's vast experience and knowledge ensures that Anaphylaxis UK’s training and education packages help people living with serious allergies and those who live and work alongside them, have the knowledge and understanding they need to ensure that the environment is safe, inclusive and welcoming. As a qualified teacher and Headteacher, she understands how to make schools safer places to learn. Mrs Dunn's knowledge of education legislation and how schools operate is invaluable with many praising how it contributes to the first-class support she provides to schools and educational settings.

Allergy education has been a passion of Mrs Dunn's for many years as she is a mum to two teenagers who have serious allergies. In a voluntary capacity, she has supported the Safer Schools Programme for Anaphylaxis UK and has worked with her local NHS Trust and Education Authority to develop robust training for schools in her area.Ìý Before joining the team, Mrs Dunn has presented at conferences including British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology and has participated in webinars that have helped improve the knowledge and understanding of allergies for school staff. In her current position, she regularly leads in person training and participates in webinars.
